Identity Theft and Art Theft

My name is incredibly rare. I can say with great confidence that I'm likely one of two people in the entire world with the combo of my first and last name. Unfortunately, this poses a rather massive security risk for me as anything I put my name on in the internet will immediately pop up with a single google search. I didn't think this was a big deal at first until a friend of mine gave me a wake-up call by googling my first and last name and then slamming me with a massive, creepy list of a lot of in-depth information about me.

Information that was open to anyone with a computer and an internet connection.

He and I swiftly went to work trying to scrub the internets clean of my massive internet footprint, and I like to think we did a pretty decent job. For the most part, all you really see is a few animations I've worked on, a twitter account that I'm probably going to delete soon, and this DA account.

Unfortunately, there's also something else that's one of the first things to pop up with a Google search of my name that really, REALLY pisses me the fuck off.

A little more then four years ago, some little dipshit decided that they would not only steal my artwork, but they would also steal my identity. She (or he, but I'm assuming it was a girl) rolled up a DeviantArt and SheezyArt account with the name Lurial, made AIM screennames similar to my own, and made an e-mail address that was very much like mine. She even stole entries from my blog, tweaked them to include her own talk about her high school classes, and posted them in her DA blog. Worst of all - she used my fucking real name.

Since I had my own website at the time and never frequented DA (I actually had a thing against DA at the time <_<; ) - I would've never have known that some fucking dumbass with no life was frolicking around pretending to be me until the girl was stupid enough to also steal the artwork of popular artist: Neon Dragon. Needless to say, NeonDragon's fans came down on the girl like the fist of an angry god. One of them noticed there was artwork that didn't belong to Neon in the gallery and started to do some detective work on where the heck the artwork came from. That's when she stumbled upon my website, contacted me to ask if I had a DA account, and when I told her that I didn't - she let me know what the heck was going on. My friend Sara and I went to work obliterating the thief's sheezyart account while NeonDragon's fans ensured a swift ban for the thief's DA account. The Sheezyart account got deleted, but DA has a policy where all banned accounts remain exactly where they are as a sort of archive. This means my real name will be attached to a DA account that was clearly banned for art theft FOREVER (well, unless DA shuts down). This does not make me a happy camper, especially in an age where employers tend to google/facebook the names of potential employees. It's been over four years and I still get really pissed thinking about it. If I could somehow get my hands on that dumbass, I would fucking wring her neck.

Dear TV and Film Industry,

Please, please, PLEASE for the love of God - stop taking popular stories with massive fan-bases and then SAVAGELY RAPING those stories by taking a massive departure from the original source material. Learn from history of mistakes countless movie-makers have left behind and be true to the story you're working with instead of making yet another critical failure that will fester in our mind's eye like a giant boil on the ass of our collective love for tales.

While making some changes to help transition a story from a book/cartoon/video game/whatever to a movie format is understandable, this is NOT a free pass to completely alter the story, adding in completely random tid bits from God knows where until, at best you have a poorly written fanfiction-turned-movie and at worst you have an unholy abomination that spits blood and failure on the face of the original creator while resembling the original source material about as well as Frankenstein resembles Megan Fox.

There is a reason why most movies based on books/games/cartoons/whatever generally fail. The stories that you mangle were popular in their original form for a reason - please try to be true to those stories instead of going in your own 'creative direction' with them. If you guys were the slightest bit creative, you'd stop mangling other people's imaginative vision and actually write your own bloody scripts.

Unfortunately, I also felt like even if I did, my letter wouldn't be seen as significant as a letter written by a person of any other ethnicity writing to the NAACP. I mean, it's one thing if a white, black, hispanic, etc writes a letter complaining about how asians and much of asian culture is being whitewashed out of the Airbender movie. It's another thing if an asian writes a letter complaining about how asians and much of asian culture is being whitewashed out of the Airbender movie.

People tend to view someone of a certain ethnicity supporting other members of their ethnicity as someone who's sort of looking out only for members of their own race.

For example, if something racist happens to a black guy and the black community gets all up in arms over it - you bet there will be people thinking that the black community is just being 'oversensitive' or 'only getting mad 'cause it happened to a black guy'.

It's different if something racist happens to a black guy and a large diverse group made up of many different ethnicities gets all up in arms over it - then more people tend to like the issue is more significant then it appears simply because not only are the African Americans getting upset about it - everyone is.

I suppose I'll write a letter to the NAACP anyway, but I hate the feeling that the individual reading it may not take it as seriously as the others. Maybe I'm just being retarded.

Okay, I think I speak for a lot of Anti-casters when I say that this whole thing is getting to be really annoying. Everyday, we have to argue with new Pro-casters about such obvious things dealing with the show. We have to post the same things over and over and over again. Quite frankly, it gets really annoying. And, we come off as mean and rude because we are annoyed of saying the same thing over and over again. Well when I first saw the trailer I got excited because the special effects looked great (barring the ((less than polished)) martial arts staff sequence which I overlooked with sympathy 'cause I told them "how" to make it right and apparently the martial art is not priority...) the more I hear about elements related to the film, the fact the guy lies about the silliest things, the race issue (sad) all puts it way on the back burner of my movie go see list.

Trust me they are seeing how the fans react but Nick Animation, Bryan and Mike HAD NO SAY IN HOW THE FILM WAS CAST so please give those guys a break. It is quite apparent what their casting choices would have been from the 7 years of work they put into the animated series.

I am desperate to get a new Wacom Tablet. I don't normally do commissions lately, but I will draw $25 bust portraits (shoulders and head) for 15 people in the same style as I did my recent 'Bodyguard' comic. Smooth painterly faces and graphic stylized hair. If you prefer, I can also go full-on with the graphic style and make the flesh cel-shaded looking as well.

Unfortunately, because I don't have a tablet right now, you will have to pay me first so I can buy the tablet, and once I have it I will immediately begin work on the busts.

If you have no idea what my 'Bodyguard' comic looks like, here are four pages. I can't show one of them because it has bewbs and photobucket doesn't like bewbs:

Well, okay, but what if you can't find 15 people willing to pay you 25$?

What I will do is display a list from 1-15 online and no one will pay anything until we reach offer number 15. This will ensure that the quota is met before anyone pulls out their wallets. If it turns out that some folks back out or don't pay at the very last second, I will either refund everyone their money or bite the bullet and pay of the rest of the difference depending on how many people bailed out.

How would I be paying you anyway?

Let's say you DO reach offer number 15 and buy the tablet. What happens then?

I start working on the commissions in the order that they were offered to me. I will make a rough sketch of your character's head and send it to you for approval. If I get your approval, I move right along to the fun coloring stage. If you don't approve and want changes, I'll redo the sketch with the changes you suggested and show it to you again.

I will only go through the approve/change process a maximum of 3 times (so we don't get stuck fiddling over the image forever), so if you don't like what you see, please try to examine the image carefully and pin-point exactly what bothers you about the picture rather then saying "I don't like it, but I'm not sure why." This will just turn Luri into a sad, sad panda.

Once the bust is done, I'll send it over for final approval. This is when you can ask me to do a few minor tweaks that you'd like to see. Once the final tweaks are done, I send you a web-version and a ginormously huge high-rez version so you can make an 8.5 x 11 print of your bust later on if you'd like.

I'd make prints of the busts myself, but I haven't found a print shop in the area yet that won't charge me an absurd amount, which would just make the costs of your commissions painfully high.

Send me an e-mail (Lurial at gmail.com) with a description of your character's physical appearance, personality, any references you might have of how they look, sometimes brief backstories can be spiffy too.

If you have an exact vision in mind for your bust, you can also tell me specifics on how you'd like it to look, like the angle of their head, their facial expression, background color, etc. Conversely, if you'd like to leave it all up to me to make up based upon the information you gave me on your character, that's fine too.

When the Federal Reserve Inspector General has no idea what the hell happened to the TRILLIONS of dollars the Federal Reserve gave out or spent in the past few months, during one of the worst economic situations of our time, that kinda freaks a person out a little.

Also, does anyone who understands politics, law, and monies more then me know if this H.R.1207 thing is a good idea? I admittedly don't know enough about how everything works to be all "Yeah, we should do this awesome!!!"

HILARIOUS parody that my friend linked to me. A crew of people basically took the DBZ plot, shortened a typical episode from 30 minutes to 8, and redubbed it to be more awesome. I enjoy this WAY more then the actual show and it's kind of amusing that sometimes the abridged parody seems to take itself seriously for a moment before dropping in hilarious things like a "Krillin Owned Count" It's particularly awesome if you've actually seen the source material.

Chai rolled up an alt on my server and we've been reminiscing about the old days in a way that is quite spiff! We've been wondering if:

1) There are any Tavnery folks who are interested in playing WoW but haven't picked it up yet.

If so, GO GET THE GAME and roll on the Cenarion Circle Roleplaying server. :D

2) There are any Tavnery folks who are currently playing WoW and can access the American Servers.

If so, roll up an alt on Cenarion Circle! Even if it's just to visit! ;_;

I has a guild there and there is this one particular empty tavern that just sits there with no NPCs in it. We could totally hijack it into a Sword and Serpent Shindig spot.

Watching the Watchmen

I figured I'd better get this in before Kyle/Prise starts posting his own thoughts and then puts words in my mouth, like the jerkface he is.

Anyways, the movie was awesome. As someone who never read the comic, but had the movie hyped up for me by a ton of buddies who HAD read the comic, I didn't leave the theater disappointed. Lots of action, great story, fantastic twists, beautiful visual effects, and elaborate characters. I really loved Rorschach. Crazy guy, but man he was my favorite character out of all the folks in the whole movie. If the comic is better then this movie, then hot damn, I need to pick up the comic sometime soon.

And of course, it also helped that Silk Spectre was totally hot. <.<; *Cough*

One thing bothers me a little though after watching the movie. When the whole film was done, I couldn't help but start thinking: "Why the hell were people freaking out and getting all riled up over Dr. Manhattan's blue piping?"

With the way people were talking about it in almost every single review about how horrible and unnecessary it was, (one critic even said that if she saw it 'one more time' she was going to go running away from the theater screaming) I was walking into the movie thinking I'd see nothing but giant blue phalluses everywhere, offending my delicate sensibilities and making my monocle fall out of place.

Folks, I BARELY even noticed the wang was there. Kyle/Prise says the wang appears four times in the movie (which made me wonder why he was counting how many times the blue penis appeared <_<....) and seeing a barely visible blue phallus in four scenes out of a three hour long movie really doesn't strike me as a reason to go "OMG BLUE PENSIES WERE EVERYWHERE. YOU CANNOT EVADE THEM. IT'S JUST THERE. WIGGLING. ALL OVER THE MOVIE." (Note: Someone actually said something like this to me)

Maybe I'm just desensitised because I have figure drawing classes every week where I'm exposed to nekkid bodies for 6 hours, but I personally found the sex scenes and the heavy gore in the movie FAR more shocking then Dr. Manhattan in the buff. ( I wasn't offended mind you, just surprised.) But no one ever mentions the softcore-porn/"hey-it's-raining-blood-and-intestines-cause-someone-just-got-combusted" as something of note! At least not to me. It boggled my mind that people were way too busy flippin' out over blue wang when you pretty much have exploding people and a mini-porno in the film.

The sex-scene was the most blatant one I've ever seen in a movie to date and people are being COMBUSTED into tiny bloody specs and smears with their innards plastered all over other people ... but critics decided they were way more stunned and offended by a penis?

Dear fellow movie-goers, I feel I should remind you that penises are a normal part of life (well, not blue ones, but you get the idea). It's how you were BORN. All men have one! It's a natural part of the male human body. Some guys might actually see theirs every day. Penises (and sex itself for that matter) are a far more normal and natural part of our lives then wild gory violence. It really boggles my mind that people want to run away from the theater because they caught a glimpse of an imaginary blue wang, but have no problems seeing human beings exploding into ribbons of gore and red pulp.

This is Sythael, my Death Knight from WoW. He runs around with a massive floppy hat, a ridiculously long scarf, and has a habit of raising small armies of undead bunnies and kittens. He also used to (and secretly still does) want to be a paladin. Some people just weren't meant to be death knights.

Avatar's cast is WHITE?

Okay, I normally don't really give a damn about casting and films because I'm all over a good story, but lately I'm starting to get more then a little annoyed with the movie industry's choices regarding casting Asians. I like to think it's not because I'm being oversensitive due to my own race, but simply because... well...

Keep in mind, I obviously have nothing against caucasians acting as I love movies and watch them all the time.

But those two cartoons are just about as far away from European culture as you can get! Avatar is clearly a mix of various Asian and Inuit cultures! In one episode you see a bunch of folks wearing Korean Hanboks - COMPLETELY unaltered! I was able to recognize them! And they mention food that I KNOW the names of and recognized in the cartoon!

And yet all the roles are just going to Caucasians because Hollywood is too scared to put another race up in the main cast. Jeez!

I mean, come on, can you REALLY see Sokka and Kiara as Eurpoeans with a tan in Inuit outfits and call it believable? Or Toff as this tiny Cacuasian girl with dyed black hair? Really?

These are really cute, somewhat old Flash Animations about a Bunny who is in love with a Cat. It's made by a bunch of Korean folks so you probably won't understand the singing in the background, but they do have English Versions where the Korean Text in the animation is replaced by English text.

For something so adorable and light, it has a lot of interesting subtext about interracial relationships, and I really liked it. Thus I thought I might share.

Yep, I know, I rarely visit LJ anymore. Every so often I poke my head back here to see what's up, but I never say much. I guess I've realised over the years that venting about my problems never really helped me much, which is mostly what I used LJ for in the past. I'm also terrible at informing people of what's been going down in my life. So instead I let people know what's going on in my life by dumping craploads of artwork on here.

It probably gives you a pretty decent idea of what I've been doing anyways.

Naked people are a staple of Art Schools.

But I finally got a Clothed Figure Drawing Class. I got to make up this girl from scratch and slap some clothing on her. I wish I could've done better with the line quality though. And made her look sexier to magnify the pin-up-girl vibe.

Ironically, I had to draw a bunch of people naked first before I got to pick which one to put clothes on.

I'm a massive nerd and lead an RP Guild on WoW.

And I inevitably made artwork for my character/guild/etc. And yes, I have a nelf huntress. It's okay to point and laugh.

- Semi WoW-Related. This was made for an RP event for the guild.

- Rough sketch of a banner for the guild. It's two of our Guild NPCs looking at each other all face-off-time!-ish.

- Another thing that's only Semi-WoW related. This is the NPC of the guild looking all menacing for an guild shindig. Yes, I know. I made him 'pretty'. It is mandatory in the Luri-Universe for stereotypical anti-hero, might-be-villain guys to look hot and have long beautiful flowing hair damn you.

- Mini comic of the two NPCs. They're supposed to be enemies and all that. And yeah, I realize Lorenthis (the woman) looks a whole lot like Lenneth from Valkyire Profile. I was totally ripping off the armor design for it.

I'd pay for my best friend's health insurance + part of her college tuition. Pay for my other friend's college tuition so she wouldn't be stuck in the shithole scam-college she got trapped in. Then I'd give half of whatever's left to my mother for putting up with me for 23 years and use the remainder to form an Awesome Company of Awesomeness.

I'd then give jobs to all the rest of my friends who are unemployed because of the shitty economy hope the company does well enough for all of us to make a living.

The California Supreme Court struck down the ban on same-sex marriage. I'm insanely happy that even though six of the seven judges were conservatives appointed by Republicans, they made a perfectly logical choice that supports the separation of Church and State.

However, I'm getting more then a little tweaked by the idiots who claim that somehow the allowance of gay marriage will lead to pedophiles trying to marry little kids and people trying to marry their pets. You need two consenting parties to make a marriage contract and the last time I checked, kids and golden retrievers don't have legal standing in a court of law. Thus they can't give consent to jack squat. (How would you even establish if an animal was giving its consent to marriage anyway?)

I also get irritated by people going and on about how marriage is a religious thing between a man and a woman and that God is probably all deeply offended by gay people getting married.

I'm sorry, but I can list a fuckload of other things God is probably far more deeply offended by then 'Bob and Steve' getting the same marriage rights as a John and Jane. And if 'marriage' is such a religious word, maybe the government should use an entirely different word in their legal documents because church and state are supposed to be separate anyway. Instead of marriage, just call it a union. Everyone, straight or gay, can get 'union' contracts and get the same exact rights. Then the religious can define the word 'marriage' all they frickin' want.
